LONELY PLANET KNOCKED OFF TOP SPOT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FIVE YEARS

Lonely Planet, global purveyors of the ubiquitous backpacker’s bible, has been knocked off top spot at the annual Wanderlust Travel Awards by fearless indie publisher Bradt Travel Guides. Historically Bradt’s own ‘road less travelled’ has followed a very different route from that favoured by ‘big publishing’. Frequently pioneering, occasionally controversial, often fighting commercial expediency and always allowing authors freedom of expression, Bradt’s unique style has proved to be a winner with Wanderlust readers.
Commenting on the awards, Wanderlust editor-in-chief Lyn Hughes said: ‘For years Lonely Planet has reigned supreme, but Bradt has just pipped it to the post this year, by less than a per cent. After four years of receiving the Bronze award I am delighted that Bradt has finally hit gold. The company has been around for more than 30 years and has over 100 titles, written with knowledge, sensitivity and understanding. Often Bradt is the first publisher to cover emerging destinations, bringing us the inside track on forgotten corners of the world like Yemen, Burkina Faso and even the Afghan capital Kabul. Watch out for their new guide to the Congo (both republics) out this March, the first in over a decade.’
The annual Wanderlust Awards, organised by the UK’s leading travel magazine for independent-minded travellers, are based on the results of an independent poll amongst its readers – nearly 3,000 consumers voted this year. The awards also recognised the top tour operators, writers, airlines, airports, festivals, travel equipment providers and websites.
